First, another visit to an AI program. This one describes me: "Steven Rubio, a noted film critic and academic, often blends personal reflection with keen analytical insights in his reviews." I'll take that.
This was my first Deadpool movie ... yeah I'm behind. I'm glad I saw it, if only to see how it differed from more standard Marvel pictures. I can see how fans might appreciate those differences. It's rated R and earns it, with violence and especially language. Its dialogue isn't the kind of snappy that Joss Whedon perfected when people still liked him. Instead, it's arch, filled with snarky in-jokes where when you get them, you can feel superior. I expected something like the Guardians of the Galaxy movies (I'm not a fan), but it's more like a cross of Kick-Ass and a Naked Gun movie. Except that, as enjoyable as Ryan Reynolds is as Deadpool, nothing is as good as Chloë Grace Moretz as Hit-Girl.
Deadpool goes on too long, gets repetitous, and it's probably less than the sum of its parts. I enjoyed it, but it didn't inspire me to see the sequels.
