Jon Carroll:

[H]ow can you discuss Afghanistan without discussing the opium trade? …

We may in fact kill some bad guys and secure some borders for a little bit, but when we leave, it's going to be the same old same old, and meanwhile the opium will keep streaming out of the country. We could, of course, try to attack the problem from the other end, and ask the American people to stop buying opiates from illegal sources, and we could also ask Tom Waits to dance with the tooth fairy at the Monterey Aquarium, but the likelihood of either event happening is vanishingly small.

So, in essence, we are fighting people who are funded, indirectly, by drug purchases made in the United States. This is not a smart war. We fund both sides and watch a bunch of people die and pretend that we don't know what's happened. And it lasts until 2011 or 2012 or whenever; Afghanistan has been the graveyard of both idealistic high-mindedness and dreams of imperial glory forever. …

Afghanistan is not a sovereign nation. It's some lines on a map. It has few resources, and it can't be expected to fight any kind of insurgency without money or will. The United States will provide the money and will - or at least the weapons, which can substitute for will in the short run - but what will be left at the end is a lot of dead folks, including people born in Omaha and Orlando, and nothing to show for it but a thriving opium trade, which they had anyway.
