friday random ten, 1999 edition

1. DMX, “What’s My Name?” DMX has what I can only call a brutal voice. He sounds real, whatever that means.
2. The Backstreet Boys, “I Want It That Way.” 1999 was a great year for pop hits.
3. Destiny’s Child, “Bills, Bills, Bills.” There are a bunch of them on this list. Pop hits, not bills.
4. TLC, “No Scrubs.” See #2 and #3 above.
5. Apollo 440, “Stop the Rock.” A different kind of hit … maybe not “pop.” Whatever that means.
6. Ricky Martin, “Livin’ La Vida Loca.” It was a year for guilty pleasures, whatever that means.
7. John Prine, “We’re Not the Jet Set.” Which doesn’t mean there was no room for John Prine and Iris DeMent.
8. Macy Gray, “I Try.” #1 in New Zealand, Australia, and Ireland.
9. Lou Bega, “Mambo No. 5.” See #6 above.
10. Britney Spears, “… Baby One More Time.” A great pop hit. A great guilty pleasure, whatever that means. Wikipedia tells us that it “is one of the most successful tracks ever released in music history reaching the #1 spot in the charts in every country it charted in.”
