Sugar (Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden, 2008). Most of the reviews note that what seems like an opportunity for clichéd plot developments actually goes in surprising directions. Sugar is not what you expect to be, no matter what those expectations are. Which is also to say that yes, it’s a baseball movie, and yes, it’s a movie about the immigrant experience in America, and yes, it’s about all sorts of things. But it’s honest about all of those angles, and the combination of them means that, yes, you never know where the events of the movie will lead you. A fine, quiet movie.
