my fifteen minutes, u.k. edition

I'm a couple of weeks behind on this one, but I only just found out about it. First, the background.

Gary Radnich is a popular local sports-talk figure. I don't listen much to sports talk ... used to, until I realized the only people dumber than the hosts were the people who called in. But I've always liked Gary, who rarely takes things too seriously, and who is far and away the white-guy talk-show host most comfortable with black callers. (Sounds weird, I know, but if you've listened to the show, you know what I mean, and it's unfortunately rather unusual.) Radnich also does the sports on KRON, a local TV station. When the San Jose Earthquakes announced the signing of English player Darren Huckerby, fans were excited, and as soon as he made it to the States, Radnich set up a live interview with him.

American soccer fans are kinda schizo about media coverage of their favorite sport. They complain all the time that the mainstream media ignores soccer, but then when soccer DOES get attention, they usually complain that the coverage itself sucked. Radnich didn't exactly endear himself to those fans in his Huckerby interview, screwing up names, indulging in odd hyperbole (he called Huckerby a "legend", which was nice but not really true) and goofy talk about Posh and Becks. Here's the interview, if you want to check it out:

Quakes fans were predictably outraged, and voiced their disapproval at arguably the most popular soccer chat site, BigSoccer. I offered my own opinion, that Radnich likes to kid around, that he didn't treat Huckerby any different than any other guest, that just by having Hucks on his show, Radnich was giving the Quakes a bit of extra promotion.

Well, a station in Norwich, which is where Huckerby played before coming to the Quakes, got wind of all of this, and posted an article on their web site talking about how embarrassed local fans were, worrying that the rest of the world might think we were as clueless about soccer as Radnich seemed to be. "Don't judge us on Huckerby interview", they called the piece. They quoted several BigSoccer members, directly from the thread where fans posted their dismay. The Norwich article was posted on July 22, but as I say, I only just saw it today.

And who do you think they quoted for an alternate viewpoint to the majority? Yep. They quoted my babbling on BigSoccer:

And an Earthquakes fan, going under the name Masoo, said Mr Radnich was the “number one” sports presenter in the area, adding: “Radnich doesn't pretend to know what he doesn't know, but he treats his interviewees like real people.
“He gives the same treatment to everyone he interviews, famous or not - light, conversational and lots of joking.
“I understand he's not everyone'e cup of tea, but by running this interview he and KRON were welcoming Huckerby to the area.”
