Sports Illustrated calls it "the ugliest rivalry in the history of Major League Soccer." Once, that was probably true. But since the San Jose Earthquakes left the Bay Area for Houston, their rivalry with the scum from Los Angeles has been off the burner, so to speak. Tonight, the new not-improved expansion version of the San Jose Earthquakes will be reborn, as they open their season of return against ... Los Angeles. I almost hope the game is ugly ... in general, I detest ugly soccer, but the Quakes won't likely be any good, they may not be entertaining (they've built their squad on defense first), and the Galaxy lost their opening match 4-0 despite the presence of their golden boys Landon Donovan and David Beckham, so ugly but fevered is probably the best we can hope for. Look for the Quakes to lose a scrappy affair 1-0 ... maybe Becks will put in a free kick ... your guess is as good as mine who will score for the Quakes (and I'm talking all season, not just tonight).
It's good to have a team again.
